Stone Fruits
Stone fruits include: apricots, cherries, plums, peaches, and nectarines. Most stone fruit orchards require a cold winter in order to produce fruit. Peaches and nectarines are the least demanding in this category as they also grow in subtropical climates.
Plant rootstock and fertilization play a key role in stone fruit production and quality. Healthy rooting and the rapid development of an orchard depend on an appropriate annual fertilization program which must target balanced nutrition in order to optimize yield and quality.
For an orchard in production, nitrogen fertilizer should be supplied at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring. Phosphorus, which has limited mobility, should be applied close to the tree roots. The best strategy for potash fertilization combines good fertilization at planting with an annual potassium supply.
